Maccaroni: a bit pricier, but convenient and packed with umami

Area:  Nagoya Station (Kintetsu bus center side)
Restarurant:  Maccaroni  マカロニ
Website and Info:  http://www.create-restaurants.co.jp/shop/index.php?controller=FrontCrShop&action=shop_show&id=296

Hours:  7am-11pm

This restaurant is conveniently located in Nagoya station (not along the main hallway).  The lunch menu is served until about 4pm, so it's a good place for a late bite.  The lunch sets include either a salad or a dessert.  I went for the pasta and salad set (1200 yen).

The salad had a light olive oil based dressing.  The crispy onion topping gave it a nice touch.

For the pasta, you can choose any of the pastas listed.  I chose the one that was the most expensive and most interesting sounding, the miso meat sauce made with Japanese wagyu beef and maitake mushrooms.  It was different than regular tomato meat sauces.  This one had a whole lot of umami, with the miso, the woodsy flavored maitake and bit chunks of meaty tomatoes (there may even have been wine added to it).  However it was slightly high on the salt content.  I don't usually order ground meat sauces but I really enjoyed this one.

After 4pm, the dinner and a la carte menu is available.  I was here just for a snack, so I ordered the foie gras and chicken liver mousse pate with cassis (\961).  The cassis sauce matched (sweet things often go well with pates) but was a little too sweet for my liking since there was a thick layer of it.  But once I ate through that, the liver mousse was a nice light concoction.  The thin crisps were a perfect consistency, not too hard and not too soft.
